Geographic Clarification
- Location: Straddles the Equator between Asia (mainland) and Australia, flanked by the Indian Ocean (west) and Pacific Ocean (east).
- Coordinates: ~6°N – 11°S, 95°E – 141°E.
- Neighbors: Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Palau (north); Timor-Leste, Australia (south); Papua New Guinea (east).
Why the Confusion?
- Its eastern provinces (Papua, Maluku) stretch into the western Pacific.
- Some definitions of "South Pacific" include the Southwest Pacific (Melanesia), which borders Indonesia.
- But politically, culturally, and geographically, Indonesia is ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) core.
