Why did many Hawaiians support proposals to make Hawaii a U.S. state?

Misconception: Many Hawaiians did not support proposals to make Hawaii a U.S. state.

In fact, many Hawaiians opposed the annexation of Hawaii by the United States and actively resisted American influence. The Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown in 1893 by a group of American businessmen and sugar planters who established the Republic of Hawaii. The republic was not supported by the majority of native Hawaiians, and there was a strong movement for Hawaiian independence. The United States annexed Hawaii in 1898, but it was not until 1959 that Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States.
