What happened to Hawaii in 1898?

In 1898, Hawaii was annexed by the United States. This occurred following a period of increasing American influence in the Hawaiian islands, including the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893 and the establishment of a provisional government that sought annexation by the United States. The formal annexation was completed on August 12, 1898, when Queen Liliuokalani, the last reigning monarch of Hawaii, officially ceded sovereignty to the United States.
