The pelagic zone is the largest of the three major life zones in the ocean. It is further divided into the epipelagic, mesopelagic, bathypelagic, and abyssopelagic zones. The epipelagic zone is the uppermost layer of the ocean and extends from the surface to about 200 meters deep. The mesopelagic zone extends from 200 to 1,000 meters deep, while the bathypelagic zone extends from 1,000 to 4,000 meters deep. The abyssopelagic zone is the deepest layer of the ocean and extends from 4,000 meters deep to the ocean floor.
