K-2 is located in the Karakoram mountain range, which is part of the Himalayas, lies in the disputed Kashmir region, a territory claimed by Pakistan, India, and China. While the summit is located in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, the northern and eastern slopes are within the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County in Xinjiang, China.
