Who named the pacific ocean great south sea?

The Pacific Ocean was not originally named the Great South Sea. It acquired this name from Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese explorer who led the first European expedition to circumnavigate the globe. Magellan named the ocean "Mar Pacifico" or "Peaceful Sea" in 1521.
