Convergent Tectonic Boundary in Washington State and the Pacific Ring of Fire

The dominant boundary is a convergent (subduction) zone. The Juan de Fuca Plate dives beneath the North American Plate off Washington, creating the Cascade volcanic arc (Mt. Rainier, St. Helens, etc.) and frequent earthquakes. This same convergent interaction characterizes most of the Pacific Rim—the "Ring of Fire."
