How Do I Dial International to the US?

Traveling abroad can be an interesting and amazing experience. However, as you travel, you may need to call back to the United States for a number of reasons, such as calling home to make sure everything is OK. If you're traveling for business, calling your office to check in is also important. Special codes are needed to call the U.S. from most foreign countries.

Instructions

    • 1

Dial any number needed to exit the phone's network. For instance, some hotels require you to dial "9" before dialing an external phone number. Such information is usually posted on the phone. If not, ask the front desk person for assistance.

    • 2

Dial the exit code for the country you are calling from (see "Resources" for a list.)

    • 3

Dial "1" followed by the full 10-digit U.S. phone number (including the area code). For example, to call from Paris to Washington, D.C., dial: 00-1-202-555-1212.
