The first European to sight the Pacific Ocean was the Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa in 1513. Balboa and his men were on an expedition to find a new route to the Spice Islands when they crossed the Isthmus of Panama and reached the shore of the Pacific Ocean.
