Why was the Pacific Ocean so called?

Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer sailing for Spain, named the body of water the "peaceful sea" (Mar Pacifico in Spanish) during a relatively calm voyage across it in 1521. He named it “Mar Pacifico” in contrast to the stormy Atlantic.
