Water's high heat capacity (4.18 J/g·K) lets the top 3 m of ocean store as much heat as the entire atmosphere. The meridional overturning circulation (MOC)—Gulf Stream, Kuroshio, Antarctic Bottom Water—moves ~1.3 PW (petawatts) poleward. This flattens the equator-to-pole temperature gradient, preventing extreme latitudinal climate bands.
Tropical cyclones (hurricanes/typhoons) are heat engines fueled by SST >26.5°C to 50 m depth. Ocean heat content (OHC) dictates intensification. Monsoons driven by land-ocean thermal contrast. Atmospheric rivers (Pineapple Express) draw moisture from warm pools.
SST anomalies (El Niño/La Niña, IOD, AMO) shift Walker/Hadley cells → reposition jet streams, storm tracks, rainfall belts globally. ENSO alone explains 30–50% of interannual climate variance.
