Why Hawaii Lacks Permanent Rivers and Lakes

Hawaii does not have any permanent rivers or lakes. The islands are volcanic oceanic islands that lack the geological conditions—such as large drainage basins and impermeable bedrock—needed for permanent surface water bodies. Instead, Hawaii has numerous streams and waterfalls that flow from the mountainous interiors to the ocean, fed by frequent rainfall. These streams are often flashy, rising and falling quickly with storms.
