Why is Britain called Great Britain?

Britain became Great Britain on the Act of Union 1707 when Scotland and England united. After England's war with Scotland (between 1688–92), an "incorporating union' brought the previously independent Scots Parliament and English Parliament together to form the Parliament of Great Britain.
