When was the city Brighton founded?

The earliest traces of human occupation of the area date to the Iron Age, when a small defensive hillfort was constructed at what is now known as Cissbury Ring. The earliest known settlement on the site of modern Brighton was a fishing village by the south of the South Downs, first recorded in 1086 in the Domesday Book as "Bristelmestune", meaning "farmstead of Beorthelm"
