London Zoo is the world's oldest scientific zoo. London Zoo was opened in 1828 as the world's first scientific zoo with an emphasis on conservation; as of 2007,[6] London Zoo houses a collection of about 698 species (with approximately 16,801individuals), making it one of the most comprehensive in the world.[7] The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is a charity incorporated and regulated by Royal Charter, receiving no government funding for the operations of London Zoo or ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.[citation needed]
