What happened immediately after the British withdrew from Palestine?

After the British withdrew from Palestine in May 1948, the local Jewish Agency declared the independence of the State of Israel, and the neighboring Arab states (Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Transjordan, and Iraq) invaded the newly-created Israeli territory the following day. This marked the beginning of the first Arab-Israeli war.
