No Limit on Number of Farms in the UK
There is no legal restriction on how many farms a person or company can own in the United Kingdom.
However, practical limits exist:
- Land availability and cost are the primary constraints.
- Planning permissions may restrict agricultural development or conversion.
- Environmental regulations (NVZs, SSSIs) affect how land is managed.
- Tenancy laws (Agricultural Holdings Act, Farm Business Tenancies) govern tenant rights if land is let.
- Subsidy rules (formerly EU CAP, now UK schemes) have payment ceilings and eligibility criteria per business.
So while you can own unlimited farms, economics, regulation, and stewardship responsibilities set the real boundaries.
