Things to Do at London Bridge

Originally built in 80 A.D. during Roman occupation and serving as the main crossing point over the Thames River for thousands of years, London Bridge has been a central meeting place in London for centuries. In times past, wealthy Londoners would live in towering houses on the bridge and the local inhabitants would shop in the markets constructed on the bridge. Rebuilt numerous times due to fire, flood, invasions and poor construction, London Bridge is now a modern granite and steel bridge with a large pedestrian sidewalk and heated pavements to prevent icing during the cold winter months. Due to its central location, the area around London Bridge contains some of London's most famous historical tourist attractions.
  1. The London Bridge Experience

    • Walk through thousands of years of history under the arches of the original 1831 bridge at the London Bridge Experience. Using Hollywood-style special effects and professional actors, the exhibit portrays sights and smells of London Bridge in Viking, Roman and Medieval times. Visitors experience the London Fire in the 17th century, dodge pick-pockets during the 19th century and see how the London Bridge was used to punish criminals throughout the ages. After the London Bridge Experience, visit the adjacent London Tombs tour to walk through the former plague pit of London. This tour is so terrifying that children under the age of 11 are forbidden to enter, and staff are placed throughout the tour to escort frightened adults out of the London tombs. Before you leave, make sure to visit the London Bridge Museum on the premises to see a historic collection of bridge models and artifacts.

    Southwark Cathedral

    • Located on the south side of London Bridge, Southwark Cathedral is the oldest cathedral in London and sits on the oldest crossing point of the Thames River. For over 1,000 years, this site has been used for Christian worship, and archaeologists believe that pagan rites were performed here in ancient times. The current cathedral is an exceptional example of Gothic architecture and was constructed between 1220 to 1420.
