Sherlock Holmes Tours in London

The fictional adventures of Sherlock Holmes written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in four novellas and numerous short stories have delighted readers across the world for more than 100 years. Holmes may be a subject of fiction, but for his fans who find themselves on vacation in London, there are numerous places to visit that can give you a taste of Holmes' Victorian-era stomping grounds. How does one deduce where these places are located? It's elementary, my dear Watson.
  1. The Sherlock Holmes Museum

    • The Sherlock Holmes Museum is a recreation of the detective's lodging house featured in Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. The address, 221b Baker St., is the actual address used in the stories, and the first floor study is arranged in a Victorian-era flavor.

The museum contains many of the artifacts one would expect to find in Holmes' home, such as a violin, a spyglass, a library, old letters addressed to Holmes, writings by Holmes' friend and sidekick, Dr. John Watson, Victorian-era paintings, handlebar pipes Holmes smoked while trying to solve crimes, and even a Watson lookalike tour guide dressed in Victorian clothing.

The museum also features a memorabilia store that claims it contains the largest collection of Sherlock Holmes souvenirs in the world.

    Sherlock Holmes Statue

    • No Sherlock Holmes tour would be complete without seeing the nine-foot-tall Sherlock Holmes statue in London. Erected in 1999, the statue stands outside the Baker Street Underground Station very near the famous Madame Tussaud's Waxworks Museum.

The statue is one of the first things tourists see when exiting the Baker Street Underground Station at the junction of Baker Street and Marylebone Road.

    The Sherlock Holmes Pub

    • A restaurant and pub commemorating the fictional detective on Northumberland Street in Westminster offers more than food and drink. There's a re-creation of Holmes' and Watson's study and sitting room that is viewable to diners as they enjoy their meals.
