Channel Islands & the British Crown: Not Part of the UK

The Channel Islands (Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, Herm) are Crown Dependencies, not part of the United Kingdom. Their unique status dates to 1066, when the Duke of Normandy became King of England. The islands remained loyal to the English Crown after mainland Normandy was lost in 1204. They are self-governing in domestic affairs; the UK handles defense and international representation. The King appoints a Lieutenant Governor in each bailiwick.
