When were you first called England?

England's name comes from the Angles, a Germanic tribe who founded several kingdoms in what is now England during the 5th century. The English language is also named after the Angles and it was they who began using the term "English" to refer to their language and ethnicity in the 11th century, with later spellings including Englisc and Englis in Anglo-Saxon. The name "England" itself can be traced back to the 9th century, with one of the first uses of the term recorded by the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in the year 897, when it was spelled Angelcynn, derived from the Old English words Englaland, meaning "land of the Angles", and Ængle-lond, meaning "the land of the English".
