Scotland remains a constituent country within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. While it retains its own distinct legal system, education system, and a devolved parliament with significant legislative powers, sovereignty ultimately rests with the UK Parliament in London. The union dates back to the 1707 Acts of Union, and despite periodic independence referendums and political debates, Scotland's constitutional position as part of the UK has not changed.
