The name Leeds derives from the River Aire, which flows through the city. It originates from the Celtic ladenses, meaning "fast flowing" or "people of the fast-flowing river."
The settlement grew around a ford on the Aire, and the name evolved from Loidis (early medieval) to Ledes (Domesday Book) to modern Leeds.
