Bodies of Water Surrounding the British Isles

The British Isles (Great Britain, Ireland, and ~6,000 smaller islands) are encircled by these seas and oceans:

  1. Atlantic Ocean – West, north, and southwest (open ocean).
  2. North Sea – East (separates GB from Scandinavia/Germany/Netherlands).
  3. English Channel – South (separates GB from France; narrowest at Dover-Calais, 33 km).
  4. Irish Sea – Between Great Britain and Ireland.
  5. Celtic Sea – Southwest of Ireland / south of Celtic Deep (off Cornwall, Wales, Ireland).

Additional Notable Waters

  • St. George's Channel – Connects Irish Sea to Celtic Sea (between Wales & SE Ireland).
  • Bristol Channel – Major inlet between S. Wales & SW England (Severn Estuary).
  • The Minch / Sea of the Hebrides – NW Scotland (between mainland & Outer Hebrides).
  • Orkney & Shetland waters – North Atlantic / North Sea transition.

These waters define the Isles' maritime climate, ecosystems, trade routes, and strategic history.
