Why did people live outside city walls of Jerusalem?

People did not typically reside outside the city walls of Jerusalem. The city walls served to protect the inhabitants from external threats and provided a sense of security. Living outside the city would increase vulnerability to potential attacks and make access to essential resources and services difficult.
