It is said that the Tower of London will crumble if the ravens leave. To ensure there are always ravens, there are at least six raven keepers looking after the eight resident ravens (the ravens are always kept in pairs of even numbers).
The original story said that Charles II (1630–1685) believed the Tower ravens' departure would prompt the Tower's collapse and the fall of the monarchy. After one raven escaped in 1981 and the Queen's jewels were stolen, the remaining birds had their wings clipped.
There are also other species housed at the Tower of London, including the Canadian black bear, and many species of birds, such as the red-billed chough, the northern shoveler, the white swan and the Canada goose.
