Most people who spend a vacation in England will spend at least a portion of their time in London, one of the cultural capitals of the world. The most efficient way to get around the main part of London is the Tube, the vast and fast subway system that lies underneath much of the city. When you get to London, pick up a free Tube map at Heathrow, or at the London Visitor center. This will ensure that you can navigate the 12 tube lines without getting lost.
If you want to see the rest of England and not limit yourself to London, rent a car. A car allows you to take in the history and scenery of England on any timeline that you want, and allows you to get off the track to discover the tiny villages and countryside locations that are not easily accessible via public transit. Remember: People drive on the left side of the road.
If you want to take public transportation to tours outside of London, the train is a good option. Lonely Planet reports that the bad reputation that the train system in London had for delays and problems has improved vastly during the past several years, and that the train is now an excellent way to travel. A BritRail pass allows you to take any train in England over a period of several days wherever you want to go. Different lengths of passes are available. These passes are the most affordable way to travel by train if you are going to do a lot of rail travel in England.
Although the seats might not be as comfortable, if you travel on a budget the bus is going to provide you with the most affordable way to get out to see England beyond the borders of London. You can reach most destinations in the country via bus. Most of the coaches are operated by National Express, although other operators also exist. You can get aboard a bus to see the country at the Victoria Coach Station on Buckingham Palace Road, just two blocks away from Victoria Station.
