How did Portsmouth get its name?
Portsmouth's name originates from "Portsea-mouth," deriving from its location and geographic connection to a naturally formed harbor and inlet of tidal water between the mainland of Hampshire and the island of Portsea off its coast. "Muð" in English and Old English refer to "the opening of a river into the sea." Portsmuth first emerged around "the mouth of the Portsea."
