The British intended to land in Georgia and use it as a base to launch attacks on other southern colonies. They hoped to cut off the southern colonies from the rest of the country and force them to surrender.
The British initially landed in Savannah, Georgia, in December 1778 and captured the city. They then moved on to Charleston, South Carolina, which they captured in May 1780. However, the British forces were eventually defeated at the Battle of Yorktown in Virginia in October 1781, which led to the end of the war in favor of the Americans.
