How did England and Scotland become the United Kingdom?

England and Scotland did not become the UK but rather the Kingdom of Great Britain. The name "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" was derived when in 1801 the Kingdom of Great Britain merged with the Kingdom of Ireland.
