Statue of Liberty Crown Access: 354 Steps to Panoramic Views

The observation windows of the Statue of Liberty are located in the crown—the seven-rayed diadem atop Liberty's head. Reaching them requires climbing a narrow, double-helix spiral staircase of 354 steps (equivalent to a 20-story building) from the pedestal's top.

The Ascent Experience

• Pedestal to crown: 162 ft (49 m) vertical climb inside the iron pylon (Eiffel's internal framework).
• Staircase: Two intertwined spirals (up/down separate) — narrow (19 in / 48 cm wide), steep, no landings.
• Restrictions: No elevator access to crown. Visitors must be physically fit, no heart/respiratory conditions, at least 4 ft tall. Children must climb independently.
• Capacity: 10 people per group, ~6 groups/hour — extremely limited.

Booking and Logistics

• Tickets: Crown Reserve tickets via Statue Cruises (official concessioner) — book 4–6 months ahead.
• Includes: Ferry (Battery Park/NY or Liberty State Park/NJ), pedestal access, crown climb, audio tour.
• Security: Airport-style screening; no bags, tripods, large cameras in crown (lockers available at pedestal).

The Reward

Through 25 gold-framed windows (symbolizing gemstones), visitors see 360° panoramas: Manhattan skyline, Brooklyn Bridge, Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, New Jersey Palisades, Staten Island, Governors Island, Ellis Island, and the vast harbor. Alternatives

Pedestal Reserve (elevator + 146 steps to pedestal balcony) offers fine views with less exertion. Grounds-only tickets allow island exploration without interior access.
