Why was trade so important in Medieval Japan?

While foreign trade brought new luxury goods, ideas, and techniques to Japan, domestic trade did even more to stimulate production, spread wealth, and create employment within medieval Japanese society. Trade routes crisscrossed the land linking rural areas with towns and cities.
