Surviving Motte-and-Bailey Castles Today

Many motte-and-bailey castles remain, often modified or restored. Notable examples:

  • Castle Rising (England)
  • Château Gaillard (France)
  • Chepstow Castle (Wales)
  • Dundrum Castle (Ireland)
  • Ludlow Castle (England)
  • Skenfrith Castle (England)
  • Tonbridge Castle (England)

These early medieval fortifications (mound + enclosed courtyard) evolved into stone castles but retain their original form in many cases.
