The Liberty Bell: Not a British Gift

The Liberty Bell was not a gift from the British. It was cast in England in 1752 by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry for the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall). The bell cracked soon after installation and was recast twice in Philadelphia before taking its current form in 1753.

Although the bell was manufactured in England, it was purchased by the people of Pennsylvania, not given as a gift.
