Scarborough Bridge, York: Permanently Closed Since 2022 Fire

Scarborough Bridge in York is permanently closed. A severe fire on May 25, 2022 critically damaged the 1960s-era footbridge over the River Ouse. Structural assessment deemed repair uneconomical and unsafe.

Current Status

• Demolition: Underway / completed (2023–2024).
• Replacement: New bridge planned—design consultation ongoing. Will be wider, accessible, with lighting and cycle provision.
• Detour: Pedestrians/cyclists use Lendal Bridge (200 m upstream) or Ouse Bridge (300 m downstream).

Historical Note

The original 1845 cast-iron bridge (George Townsend Andrews) carried the York–Scarborough railway. Replaced 1960s with current footbridge when line diverted. Name persisted.

Check City of York Council website for replacement timeline. For now: no crossing at Scarborough Bridge.
