Why Washington in Washington, D.C.?

Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, is named after George Washington, the first President of the United States. The city was originally called "The Federal District" or simply "The District." However, in 1790, President George Washington himself suggested that the capital city should be named after him as a tribute to his leadership and contributions to the nation. The name "Washington, D.C." was officially adopted in 1800.
