In 1937, Elba held the first Elba Volunteer Fire Department Field Day. That year marked the first raffle for a brand new car, something that's been a highlight of the festival ever since. In 1947, the Onion Queen pageant introduced a new flavor to the festival -- the competition celebrates the rich agricultural history of the area. The tradition continues today as the annual Onion Festival is still sometimes referred to as "Field Day."
A fireman's parade kicks off the festival each year, followed by a kiddie parade the next day. Live music performances are held at various times throughout the event. Midway rides and games, a beer tent and food vendors -- many of which offer onion-themed dishes -- are additional festival attractions. Food events, including a chicken barbecue and a roast beef dinner, are also on the schedule. And, there's the highlight of the festival -- the Onion Queen pageant for high school girls that includes a special crowning ceremony. The final event of the festival is the raffle drawing for the car.
Though previous festivals have been held at Elba Village Park in downtown Elba, the city recently moved the location to the Elba Fire Department Recreation Hall grounds. The festival is scheduled for the first Friday and Saturday in August each year. Festivities begin on Friday afternoon and conclude with the car raffle drawing at midnight on Saturday.
The Onion Festival is an important annual event in the small town of Elba. It is organized by the Elba Volunteer Fire Department, which is partially funded by festival proceeds. Current residents enthusiastically take part in festival events and competitions, while many former residents return to Elba just for the occasion. Meanwhile, the event itself serves as a reminder of the town's long history, agricultural roots and strong community spirit.
