Events in Rome, New York

Incorporated in 1870, Rome, N.Y., has its share of historical milestones. According to the city's official website, the city was the home of Francis Bellamy, author of the "Pledge of Allegiance." Initial digging for the Erie Canal began in Rome in the 19th century, and in 1999, the city was the setting for "Woodstock '99," a 30-year anniversary celebration of the iconic Woodstock music festival. When in Rome, there are many fun, free and family-friendly events to participate in.

  1. Rome Renaissance Festival

    • An annual tradition since 2006, the Rome Renaissance Festival is a volunteer-run arts and crafts show featuring live entertainment, food and games for all ages. According to its website, the Rome Renaissance Festival puts all profits generated from the two-day event towards civic education, beautification or cultural projects.The location of the festival changes each year, and as of September 2010, the Rome Renaissance Festival does not charge an admission fee.

    Summer in the Square

    • This annual five-week concert series is held at the Center Square at Rome's City Hall, located between West Liberty Street and East Dominick Street. Every Wednesday night, a different band plays from 6 to 9 p.m., and a different theme is chosen to coincide with the weekly concert. All of the Summer in the Square concerts are open to children as well as adults. A tradition in Rome since 2004, Summer in the Square also features food and games and is free to the public.

    Canalfest

    • Canalfest originated in 2002, sponsored by the Rome Rotary Club. The three-day festival is held at Bellamy Harbor Park at the Erie Canal, and features a variety of activities for children and adults. Canalfest participants can take part in baking contests, foot races or a kayaking race, or take in live music, a water ski show or cooking demonstrations. The Rome Rotary Club uses proceeds from Canalfest to raise money for community activities.
