Travel Documents for U.S. Citizens Visiting St. Thomas
No passport required. St. Thomas is part of the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI), an unincorporated U.S. territory. U.S. citizens can travel there freely—it's domestic travel.
What You Need
- Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or military ID) for airport security and check-in.
- Proof of citizenship (birth certificate, naturalization certificate) is recommended but not mandatory for entry. It helps if questions arise or for re-entry to the mainland.
Practical Tips
- REAL ID: Starting May 7, 2025, a REAL ID-compliant license (or passport) is required for domestic flights. Check your license for the star.
- Cruise passengers: If your cruise begins/ends in a U.S. port and visits only U.S. territories, a birth certificate + photo ID may suffice. But a passport is strongly advised for emergencies.
- Non-U.S. citizens: Must carry valid passport and any required U.S. visa/ESTA.
St. Thomas uses the U.S. dollar, U.S. postal service, and U.S. cell carriers (often domestic rates). No customs on arrival from the mainland.
