Which U.S. State Is the "Beaver State"? It's Oregon, Not Delaware

Correcting the Nickname

Oregon is officially nicknamed the "Beaver State." The beaver is Oregon's state animal, appears on the state flag (reverse), and symbolizes the early 19th-century fur trade that drove the region's economy.

Delaware's Nicknames

• "The First State" – First to ratify the U.S. Constitution (Dec 7, 1787).
• "Diamond State" – Thomas Jefferson reportedly called it a "jewel" for its strategic location.
• "Blue Hen State" – Revolutionary War regiment carried blue gamecocks.
• "Small Wonder" – Modern tourism slogan.

Delaware's state animal is the blue hen chicken, not the beaver.
