Where is Guantanamo Bay?

Guantanamo Bay is a U.S. military base located in Cuba, about 95 miles (153 kilometers) southeast of Havana. It is an enclave comprising 45 square miles (117 km2) of land and water on the southeastern coast of the island.

Guantanamo Bay was originally acquired by the United States through a treaty with Cuba in 1903. The treaty, which is still in effect, granted the United States perpetual control of the bay in exchange for an annual rent payment of $2,000.

Guantanamo Bay has been used as a U.S. naval base since the early 20th century. It has also been used as a prison camp for enemy combatants, most notably during the War on Terror. The Guantanamo Bay detention camp has been widely criticized for its harsh conditions and its use of torture and other forms of abuse.
