U.S. Boundary Changes in the 1840s
The 1840s saw massive U.S. territorial expansion:
- Annexation of Texas (1845): Added present-day TX + parts of OK, KS, CO, NM, WY.
- Oregon Treaty (1846): Set 49th parallel border with Britain, gaining OR, WA, ID, parts of MT, WY.
- Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848): Ended Mexican–American War; Mexico ceded CA, NV, UT, most of AZ, NM, parts of CO, WY. Rio Grande confirmed as TX border.
These actions made the U.S. a continental power.
