Inexpensive Things to Do in San Francisco

Although many of the sights and sounds of San Francisco can be pricey, with a little bit of planning you can see much of the city and leave some money in your pocketbook.

  1. Cable Cars

    • The cable cars are not only a famous site of the city, but they provide a fun experience and great way to see some famous scenery. An unlimited full day pass is just over $10.
      When you are done with your ride, don't forget the museum. It is both fascinating and free.

    The Golden Gate Bridge

    • While driving this 1.7-mile famous suspension bridge will cost a $5 toll, walking it is not only free, but is the preferred way to see the structure. Walking the bridge allows you to take everything in without worrying about traffic.
      While at the bridge also check out the surrounding Golden Gate Park, full of sites and activities, many of which are free.

    Opera

    • The San Francisco Opera puts on free productions throughout the year. For a schedule, visit www.sfopera.com.

    Fisherman's Warf

    • While there are many vendors happy to take your tourist dollars lining this famous area of San Francisco, taking a walk and seeing the site is completely free.
      Don't forget to stop by Pier 39 to see the sea lions.
      For a good bargain, check out the WWII submarine at Pier 45. For just under $10 for adults and under $5 for kids, you can take a look inside this maritime artifact.

    Art Museums

    • Several popular art museums and galleries open their doors to the public free of charge on the first Tuesday of every month. These museums include the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, the Center for the Arts at Yerba Buena Gardens, de Young Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Asian Art Museum.
