Fun Things to Do in San Francisco at Night

San Francisco is home to some of the country's most well-known landmarks, like the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars and the Fisherman's Wharf. Tourists or recent transplants to the city may find plenty of things to do during the day but wonder where the fun is at night. While the city is full of great nightclubs and bars, there are plenty of less traditional things to see and do when the sun goes down.

  1. Vampire Tour of San Francisco

    • The Vampire Tour of San Francisco is an exploration of the city's origins and history, delivered in a less traditional manner than other tours. Guide Mina Harker has lived on the city streets ever since being banished from London in 1897 by County Dracula, so she has seen the San Francisco come to life and undergo great change over the last century. The tour begins at 8 p.m. in Nob Hill and lasts around two hours. It is intended as a lighthearted, alternative historical walking tour that is 85 percent fact and 15 percent more 'ethereal' information. Each night, a raffle is held before the tour begins, with the winner taking home a vampire-themed prize.

    • Landmark Theatres runs midnight film screenings at The Bridge and The Clay as part of its "Landmark After Dark" program. The Clay, one of San Francisco's longest running movie theatres, was built in 1901. Certain midnight screenings are for age 21 and older and are run in conjunction with the Solstice Bar and Lounge. The Bridge was established in 1939 and is a single screen art deco style theatre. Both theatres show midnight film screenings in various genres and often feature a special guest appearance as part of the show.

    Twin Peaks

    • The Twin Peaks are the second highest point in San Francisco and provide stunning, sweeping views over the city. The area below North Hill known as Christmas Tree Point is the best unobstructed view of San Francisco. A highly visited locale, Twin Peaks is most occupied during the day but perhaps at its most beautiful at night. The lights of buildings and traffic below fan out and twinkle constantly, creating a brilliant landscape. Twin Peaks is worth visiting no matter what time of day, but can be a more fun experience at night when there are fewer people and the lights of the city vividly come to life.
