How to Move to Issaquah, Washington

Issaquah, Washington lies 16 miles to the east of downtown Seattle, and is an easy drive down Interstate 90 when traffic isn't heavy. Located at the base of the Cascade mountain range, the city has grown from its early days as a logging town, to one influenced heavily by the high-tech sector, particularly Microsoft. Jobs pay well in the high-tech sector, but that also means the cost of living can be high.

Learn the demographics, especially the housing characteristics. U.S. Census data estimates Issaquah's population to be about 23,000. The median household income in 2009 was about $82,000, more than $30,000 higher than the U.S. average. The median home price was $427,200. Owner-occupied homes account for about 65 percent of the city's housing stock.

Find work. The Seattle area was affected by the economic downturn that began in 2008, but not as severely as other major metropolitan areas. The major area employers include Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Boeing. Issaquah's location makes it convenient to most of the major employers and is, itself, home to Costco's corporate headquarters.

Study the schools. The area is filled with high achieving high schools and Issaquah High School fares well. About 40 percent of the school's students participate in college level advanced placement classes, with more than 80 percent passing the AP exams. Issaquah students also fare above average on state standardized tests.

Contact the Issaquah Chamber of Commerce, which has an online directory of the different utility companies and other relocation services you might need to ensure a seamless move. The chamber also has information about business licensing and area amenities, such as parks and trails. The chamber can be reached online at issaquahchamber.com.
