The United Artists Parkway Place (fandango.com), or UA Parkway Place 10, is a movie theater complex at the intersection of Airport Road (Highway 475) and Lakeland Drive (Highway 25). This movie theater has 10 movie screens. UA Parkway Place 10 is open seven days a week. Movies usually begin showing after noon. The lobby of the movie theater has an arcade area, where visitors may play video games before or after watching a movie. Drink and snack concessions are also available in the front lobby.
Some of greater Jackson's largest shopping centers are on the eastern end of Lakeland Drive in Flowood. Flowood's shopping centers have clothing retail stores, day spas, restaurants, women's accessories shops gift shops and other specialty stores. One of Flowood's largest malls is the Dogwood Festival Market (dogwood-festival.com); it's a outdoor mall that features department and retail stores such as Belk, Target, Borders and Old Navy. Within five minutes of Dogwood are the Lakeland Commons at Lakeland Drive & Old Fannin Road (601-919-3467) and Magnolia Marketplace (601-992-0300). Lakeland Commons and Dogwood Festival Market have outdoor promenades, allowing shoppers to walk outside from store to store.
The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science (museum.mdwfp.com), or MMNS, is in the heart of Jackson's LeFleur's Bluff State Park, just west of Flowood's western edge (the Pearl River) and also on Lakeland Drive. This museum offers indoor science-based exhibits such as life-size figures of Mississippi's native animals, and "The Swamp," a 700 square-foot space featuring an aquarium with live turtles and fish. MMNS offers a Kids Club; this club allows children grades kindergarten to 12 to participate in nature-related games and activities. Also, visitors may watch divers feed the Museum's fish on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
Located on Lakeland Drive, the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Museum (mdac.state.ms.us) is in Jackson just a couple minutes west of Flowood. Flowood and greater-Jackson locals knows this attraction as the Ag Museum. The Ag Museum is home to the National Agricultural Aviation Museum, which features exhibits on agricultural airplanes such as crop dusters. Two exhibits at the Ag Museum, the Fortenberry-Parkman Farmstead and Ethnic Heritage Center, allow visitors to view Mississippi agricultural life in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Two private schools, Jackson Preparatory School (jacksonprep.net) -- or Jackson Prep -- and University Christian School (universitychristianschool.org), or UCS, are on Lakeland Drive in Flowood. Both schools host their basketball games at on-campus arenas. The basketball season for Jackson Prep and UCS occurs from late fall to mid-winter. These schools have basketball teams on the junior high and high school levels. You can see Jackson Prep's soccer and baseball fields from Lakeland Drive.
Jackson's only not-for-profit professional theater, New Stage Theater (newstagetheatre.com), is a 10-minute drive west of Flowood, right off Fortification Street. New Stage features the 364-seat Meyer Crystal Auditorium and produces five musicals and/or dramatic plays throughout the year. Belhaven University (belhaven.edu) and Millsaps College (millsaps.edu) also produce plays near Jackson's Belhaven neighborhood, also less than 10 minutes from Flowood. The theatrical season at New Stage, Belhaven and Millsaps runs from fall to spring.
