What Sights Are Along I-80 Between Pennsylvania & Illinois?

Interstate 80 runs across the United States, connecting the San Francisco Bay on the West Coast to New York City in the East. On the section of I-80 that passes through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and into Illinois, the interstate crosses farm country. Sights along the way include a national park in the Pennsylvania Wilds, mining country in Pennsylvania and Ohio, President McKinley's birthplace in Ohio, and the College Football Hall of Fame, maintained by Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.
  1. Bald Eagle State Park in North-Central Pennsylvania

    • To get to Bald Eagle State Park, if you are traveling on I-80 West, get off of the interstate at Exit 158; if you are traveling on I-80 East, get off at Exit 178. The park's opportunities for recreation include the Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir, which allows boating at all times and swimming when the pool reservoir is filled throughout the summer starting in mid-May. Fishing and picnicking are also allowed, and the picnic areas are equipped with restrooms, tables and grills. Hunting of animals in-season is allowed, and hiking is permitted along the 11 miles of trail that run through the park.

    Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train in Ashland, Pennsylvania

    • To get to Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine, if you're traveling on I-80 West, get onto I-80 South, take Exit 124B and follow Rt. 61 until you get to the coal mine. If you're traveling on I-80 East, take exit 224 and take Route 54 the rest of the way to the coal mine. At Pioneer Tunnel, you may go through the introductory exhibit at the entrance, take a tour of the coal mine, and take a ride on the steam train. The tours and steam train run from April through October, with the greatest number of train rides and tours available from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

    President McKinley's Birthplace in Niles, Ohio

    • To get to the museum and monument at President William McKinley's birthplace, take I-80 East. Get off I-80 at Exit 223 and take Route 46 roughly 4 miles into Niles. The museum and monument is open all year, and tours run until 3:30 p.m. every day of the week except Sunday. The museum exhibits are items that belonged to and refer to President McKinley from the early years of his life through his presidency, which ran from 1897 to 1901. The monument is a structure built around a statue of President McKinley and also contains busts of other political figures of his era such as Theodore Roosevelt and John Hay.

    College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Indiana

    • To get to the Hall of Fame, from I-80, take Exit 77 and turn right onto S. Dixie Way, which runs right to the University of Notre Dame, which houses the Hall of Fame. The College Football Hall of Fame is open all days except major holidays such as New Year's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Hall of Fame is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except on weekends when the University of Notre Dame football team is playing a home game -- on those weekends, the hours are extended and may run as long as 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Hall of Fame includes exhibits on the traditions of college football as well as on the players who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
