What Are the Boundaries of the Mid-Atlantic States?

The Mid-Atlantic States are situated on the eastern past of the United States, between the New England and Southern Atlantic states. The boundaries of this region vary depending upon the source, with some reports even including the Carolinas. However, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Middle Atlantic Division includes only New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
  1. New York

    • The majority of New York is bordered by Pennsylvania to the south and Canada on its north side. To its east are --- from north to south --- Vermont, Maine and Connecticut. New Jersey abuts the New York state line on the south side by the eastern corner.

    New Jersey

    • New Jersey's north half is nestled between Mid-Atlantic states Pennsylvania and New York. Its southern borders hit Delaware on the west and the Atlantic Ocean along almost the entire east coast.

    Pennsylvania

    • With New York to its north and New Jersey on the eastern border, most of Pennsylvania's variant boundaries are west and south of this rectangular state. Ohio and West Virginia take up the west side, and the southern border abuts West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey.

    Boundary Differences

    • It is interesting to note the different definitions of the Middle Atlantic States, even within governmental organizations. The Environmental Protection Agency has mapped out the Mid-Atlantic to include Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. This is vastly different from the Census Bureau's three-state cluster, and these agencies only agree on one state: Pennsylvania.
