Fifth Avenue is more than just a major New York City thoroughfare. It's also the heart of one of the United States' premier shopping districts, the location of some of the most expensive retail space in the world and the home of many exclusive department stores, shops and boutiques.
Saks Fifth Avenue, a luxury specialty store created in the 1920s by a merger between Saks and Gimbels department stores, sells designer clothes, handbags, jewelry, cosmetics, fragrances, home decor and gourmet food. Saks has 49 stores in 23 states; the 5th Avenue location is its flagship store.

When it was founded in 1826, Lord & Taylor became the first upscale department store in the United States. Known for its many firsts, it was the first department store on 5th Avenue, the first department store to have more than one branch, the first to install an elevator, the first offering personal shoppers and the first with a female president. Since the early 1900s, Lord & Taylor has been famous for its creative window displays showcasing the latest fashions. Every Christmas, its talented window designers create elaborate Christmas-themed windows for the enjoyment of both shoppers and passersby.

Perhaps one of the most famous toy stores in the world humbly began in the 1860s when three brothers from Westphalia, Germany, established FAO Schwarz "Toy Bazaars" in New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Boston. The New York City branch soon dominated the business. In 1876, the company published the first of its prized catalogs and moved to a more upscale location. The current location in the General Motors building opened in 1986. FAO Schwarz is known for its unique selection of toys, artistically designed catalogs and elaborate displays, and is as much a tourist attraction as it is a toy store.
