    FAO Schwarz

    • Perhaps one of the most famous toy stores in the world humbly began in the 1860s when three brothers from Westphalia, Germany, established FAO Schwarz "Toy Bazaars" in New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Boston. The New York City branch soon dominated the business. In 1876, the company published the first of its prized catalogs and moved to a more upscale location. The current location in the General Motors building opened in 1986. FAO Schwarz is known for its unique selection of toys, artistically designed catalogs and elaborate displays, and is as much a tourist attraction as it is a toy store.
