Floyds Knobs is Indiana's best known knob. This unincorporated community, once rural, is now more suburban in nature. Many residents commute to jobs in nearby New Albany. Those looking for the excitement of the big city head to Louisville, which is located just minutes away.
Pilots Knob is a small, unincorporated community located approximately 30 miles west of Floyds Knobs in Crawford County. This area is famous for outdoor recreation including hiking, fishing, canoeing and even skiing. Hoosier National Forest, the state's largest recreation area, is located just minutes west of Pilots Knob. The forest service website offers additional information on recreational activities. A growing agri-tourism has also taken root around Pilots Knob.
The Knobstone Trail offers Hoosiers a rare opportunity to backpack in a semi-wilderness setting. In a state more famous for corn and race cars than hiking, this trail runs fifty eight miles from west of Scottsburg to Dream Lake. According to IndianaTrails.com, many Hoosiers use the Knobstone Trail to prepare for longer hikes on the rugged Appalachian Trail.
The Knob isn't a knob at all, except in name. According to MountainZone.com, this gentle hill is the fourth highest point in the state of Indiana. It is located in the northeast corner of the state, far from the Knobstone Escarpment from which the state's other knobs derive their names. The Knob is located on private property and cannot be climbed without permission.
